Who, What, Why, Where, When
- This important study, entitled “In search of Excellence: Chinese American
Librarians in the 21st Century”, is conducted by Lian Ruan, Director/Head
Librarian, Illinois Fire Service Institute, and Jian Anna Xiong, Assistant
Professor/Government Information Librarian at Southern Illinois University
at Carbondale. Support has been provided partially by the Chinese American
Librarians Association (CALA) Sally C.Tseng Professional Development Grant.
- This research study involves responses to a questionnaire by Chinese American
librarians across the nation.
- The purpose of this study is to help Chinese American's professional development
by enhancing the understanding and further building the knowledge base of
Chinese American Librarianship. Another main purpose of the proposed study
is to provide solid evidence to help CALA achieve it's organizational purpose.
- Chinese American librarians, mainly from the current CALA membership directory,
will be asked to complete a brief questionaire. The questionnaire takes only
15 to 20 minutes to complete online. Once completed, the questionare
will be stored in a secure database. The online version of the questionaire is located at:

- After receiving the completed questionnaires, Lian Ruan and Anna Xiong,
principal investigators will analyze data and interprete the findings.
They plan to disseminate the context and purpose of the study, its methods,
findings, limitations, and conclusions by writing research papers and present research findings
at local, regional and national conferences, such as the Joint Conference of Librarians
of Color 2006 (JCLC'06), Annual Conference of the American Library Association (CALA),
etc. They also aim to publish the research results in peer-reviewed
journals such as College and Research Libraries News or Chinese Librarianship: an Electronic International Journal (CLIEJ).
- The major project tasks and milestones are as follows:
- Phase I: Preparation & Setup (June to September 2005)
- Phase II: Collection of Research Data. Follow-up (October 2005-March 2006)
- Phase III: Data Analysis and Research Publication and Presentation (April-June 2006)
Confidentiality
- Your responses will be confidential. The questionnaires are identified
only by I.D. number.
Voluntary
Your participation in this research is voluntary.
You may skip questions or terminate your participationat any time. Your decision to
participate, decline, or withdraw from participation will have no impact on your present
or future relations with the University of Illinois in any way.
Risks and Benifits
There are no risks from participation beyond those that exist in normal daily life.
Although there may not be immediate direct benefits to you, you will be providing
valuable infomation for the field of Chinese American Librarians.
