Highway Watch Illinois

Highway Watch is a national driver-led, American Trucking Associations (ATA) supported, state-organized set of efforts focused on providing truck drivers with the expertise, tools, and support they need to make a positive difference in their neighborhoods and on America's roadways. The program is funded on a national level by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

As trucking companies and commercial truck drivers further utilize wireless, location, and communication technologies, there exists a tremendous opportunity to help save more lives through the fast and accurate reporting of accidents, impediments, or dangers on the highway to the proper public safety agencies.

By increasing the number of eyes and ears out on the road, combined with more rapid and reliable reporting, Highway Watch will serve to reduce response time to highway incidents. Highway Watch brings together the trucking industry, law enforcement and other safety and security professionals as allies -- working together to make the nation's highways safer.

Highway Watch is a public/private partnership designed to:

IMPROVE SAFETY AND SECURITY

Reducing the number of highway accidents, serious injuries, and deaths;
Reducing police and public safety response time to highway emergencies;
Identifying unsafe drivers, drunken driving, and road roage;
Summoning help for stranded motorists;
Alerting transportation authorities and the public-at-large to hazardous or changing road conditions;
Enhancing safety and security at rest stops;

PROMOTE IMAGE

Increasing the positive visibility of truck drivers on the highway and gaining the support of the media and all motorists;

CREATE PARTNERSHIPS

Coordinate with other safety initiatives, government officials, and individuals who also care about public safety;

DISSEMINATE INFORMATION

Distribute Highway Watch report information and statistics to interested government and industry officials for use in highway safety education and prevention programs.

This is an Illinois Department of Transportation program that is supported by IFSI
